As one of two climbers on the PROBAR® athlete team, we’re stoked to have Andy Raether on board. We wanted to bring the PROBAR® community up to speed on what Andy has been doing and what’s on his project list.

Current Projects

Currently I am working on getting the second ascent of a sport climb at The Monastery which is a climbing area near Estes Park, CO. The climb is called Grand Old Opry and the first ascent was done by Tommy Caldwell almost a decade ago. Many of the top US climbers have attempted to do this route, but none have succeeded. Everyday I am getting closer to being able to send it

After I send this route I will be doing some filming for a upcoming climbing film called “Rocky Mountain Highball” to be released late in the year. My part of the film will be doing first ascents of high-balls in a undeveloped high alpine bouldering area in Rocky Mountain National Park. a high-ball is a bouldering problem that is usually in the range of 18-30+ ft tall and has a significant element of danger because of its height.

What’s Next?

Next on my plate will be making first ascents of a few new sport climbs in a world class climbing area in Rifle, Colorado. These routes should end up being some of the most difficult rock climbing in the country.

I am looking forward to attending the Outdoor Retailers show in August [held in Salt Lake City, Utah bi-annually]. During the show I will be competing in the Mammut/Easern Mountain Sports Bouldering Championships. These bouldering championships will be held Saturday, August 11, on the rooftop of the Shilo Inn’s parking complex after day three of Summer Market.
