Winter has arrived. Sure, it may be record setting heat in the Northeast where you’re still waiting for the beautiful fall foliage and the South isn’t even thinking about snow or ice but for those of us in the Rocky Mountains this past week has brought snows and lower than average temps.
With nearly 20″ of snow at Alta Ski Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon on top of an existing 19″ base I figured that there was likely enough snow on Mount Timpanogos to head up to the permanent snowfield to ski some powder.
This is no roadside event. Hiking up to the saddle on the snowfield of Timpanogos is a 4-5 hour hike covering about 7 miles and 4200 vertical feet. While putting together my pack the night before I grabbed 2 PROBARS, a Superfood Slam and a Nutty Banana Boom. For good measure I threw in some hot cocoa mix and a Ramen noodle mix along with my Jetboil.
After a super early start of 4 am and a cold sunrise 3000 feet later, I grabbed the Superfood Slam for breakfast. Just over 2 hours later we found ourselves at the top of the saddle, looking west into Utah Valley and north down the snowfield and towards Park City. We were ready to drop in for some well deserved turns.
We skied 2 laps of boot deep snow. The powder was great and the views incredible. As we started down we stopped at the hut to melt some snow for hot cocoa and I downed the Banana Nut bar. A perfect meal. When my buddy asked me what I brought for food I said, “Two PROBARS and Ramen.” He was blown away.
A couple more hours of hiking down with skis on our backs and we were at the car. Surprisingly I didn’t feel all that hungry despite the few thousand calories I’m sure we burned.
I’m stoked for this winter of backcountry and resort skiing to have PROBAR as my go to food. Less bulk, more real energy and easy on the stomach it’s the perfect ski food.
