Appalachian Trail Survival

We love stories about how PROBAR is a part of your adventures, be they grand or small. This story from Arren Kinnetz is one of those types of stories.

While it may be easy to read this and say “yea, sure” I can tell you from my experience yesterday biking 50 miles in the mountains of Utah when the simple act of eating a PROBAR gave me the lift and warmth I needed to sustain my energy to see the ride through.

Thanks Arren for giving PROBAR a chance on your Appalachian Trail hike.

I’m no athlete, I’m just your average AT section hiker. The first backpacking trip that I took probar on I had planned on a conservative 8 mile
day avg with the longest day at 10 mi. I had actually never broken 12 mi in a day. I brought the bars along as a mid day booster meal. On the second to last day we moved into our campsite at about 2 in the afternoon and didn’t feel like stopping. We went on to hike 17 mi that day. I was exuberant. The next day we only had 5 mi to hike out to the car. I was pretty slow because of the extra miles the day before. It was two miles up to the top of a mountain and about halfway up we realized that the weather was turning pretty bad. Rain had turned to sleet and by the top it was sleet and hail.

We were soaked through to the bone and the wind was threatening to whip us right off the top of the mountain. All the while every step was treacherous because it was iced over rock. At one point I was certain that I was facing hypothermia because I could feel my temperature dropping and my mind was getting foggy.

None of the other snacks I had helped me but as soon as I ate that bar my energy returned and my temp rose enough to get out of there and into a dry place. 3mi away from the car is nothing but it is still far enough to freeze to death or trip and fall and I’m thankful that I brought those with me.

It may not have turned out for the worst but it turned out all right and that’s what I’m happy about and I hiked my longest day ever!
