I was meeting with some friends from work at a bike shop in La Jolla (San Diego, CA). I started telling them about my day - I was taking a fire technology class that was particularly physically demanding, and complaining about how I could never find a suitable form of sustenance to carry me through the class without feeling the sudden need to refuel, and then subsequently wanting to puke because I’d put something in my stomach and then tried to do some physical challenge.

One of the store employees overheard this and recommended the Pro Bar. “These things are fantastic,” he said. “One bar is a full meal. You have one of these, and you’re set. I pack these when I go biking.” I looked at the label, and was quite impressed. I’m also a vegetarian, and, if it can be helped, I try my darnedest to stay away from processed foods, things with high fructose corn syrup, and the like.

The carb content is fabulous for my needs, as are the calories, and the sodium is gloriously low. You even use dark chocolate instead of milk (in those bars that have chocolate in them), which is a thousand times better for the body.

So I bought a few, and gave my first one a try the next time I had class. It worked! I ate it before I got there, and through the whole thing I wasn’t hungry at all; not only that, but my energy level stayed up and level, instead of dropping off and leaving me feeling weak and shaky. This is a huge asset, in that I no longer have to stop, take a break, run back to my car to get something to eat, let it settle, and come back. I swear by these things now.

I’ve shared them with my sister, a spin instructor, fitness enthusiast, and a former firefighter herself. I’ve put them on my Christmas list (in large quantities), and with my fire academy coming up next month, these things are going to be my best friend and constant companion. I’m even going to share them with my academy classmates, because I think they’ll fall as much in love with them as I have. When we’re out on extended wildland training, these things will do wonders to sustain us.
