Favorite Healthy Finds: Workout Fuel

Screen Shot 2018-06-27 at 3.00.06 PM Eli Kerr started out as an outdoor recreation enthusiast. Then he took his love for healthy living to the next level when he founded Gnarly, a company that produces nutritional products for active folks. As Gnarly’s busy CEO, he knows how important the right products are for optimal wellness, despite a busy lifestyle.

What gets Eli revved up? We asked this athlete and entrepreneur to round up his favorite healthy finds to see what it takes to power up his day.

Go-for-the-gold cookbook

Screen Shot 2018-06-27 at 3.00.19 PM This beautiful cookbook is written by Shalane Flanagan, a world-class marathoner and four-time Olympian along with chef and nutrition coach Elyse Kopecky. It’s full of delicious and healthy recipes for meals, side dishes, and snacks to support and fuel athletes.

Go green

Screen Shot 2018-06-27 at 3.00.32 PM This is my go-to green drink of choice when my nutrition isn’t optimal but I still want to perform at a high level. A concentrated and nutrient-dense food, Green Vibrance is packed with organic vegetable sources, probiotics, and digestive enzymes. It supports healthy digestion, energy levels, and immune system function.

Amino acids

Screen Shot 2018-06-27 at 3.00.41 PM Gnarly branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are a clean and natural alternative to many of the artificially flavored and colored BCAA products on the market. With 5 grams of vegan BCAAs (most are sourced from duck feathers) in a 2:1:1 ratio, Gnarly BCAAs deliver the free-form amino acids you need for recovery without lots of excess ingredients. It contains a modest amount of caffeine from green tea to provide an energy boost and increase endurance. Want to skip the caffeine? Gnarly now offers a berry lemonade flavor that’s available in caffeinated and decaffeinated versions, too.

Energy chews

Screen Shot 2018-06-27 at 3.00.51 PM I’ve tried a ton of energy chews. These are by far my favorite. They’re delicious, organic, and moist. With 24 grams of carbs per serving, 20 milligrams of caffeine from yerba mate, plus electrolytes and B vitamins, they give me energy and the nutrients I need to keep performing. These energy chews are ideal to consume before or during training. My favorite flavor is the cran-pomegranate.

Running vest

Screen Shot 2018-06-27 at 3.01.00 PM This is by far the best running vest I’ve ever used. It’s light, and the mesh wicks away moisture to prevent chafing. The strap system also allows for customized fit and has storage pockets for your phone, ample fuel, and extra gear. It fits everything I need for long runs and hikes. While it can fit a reservoir if one is needed, the soft bottle/holster system works great and is easy to use, too.

Recovery protein

Screen Shot 2018-06-27 at 3.01.16 PM Gnarly Nutrition whey protein is my go-to protein for recovery. Shannon O’Grady, PhD, the director of product for Gnarly Nutrition, notes that the company uses whey sourced from New Zealand cows that are grass-fed year-round to ensure a clean product without GMOs, antibiotics, or synthetic hormones. Gnarly Whey contains probiotics and digestive enzymes to promote general gut health. To keep sugar low, it contains natural sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit extract.

Golden milk

Screen Shot 2018-06-27 at 3.01.21 PM Gaia Herbs golden milk is a delicious, healthy, and relaxing way to restore your body after a long day. It’s based on a traditional Ayurvedic recipe. The drink is rich in turmeric (where it gets its golden color from), which can support a healthy inflammatory and healing response. I make a cup at night mixed with warm coconut milk, local honey, and cinnamon. Not only is it delicious, but it helps me sleep well while aiding my body in recovery.   As seen on Healthline at by Kristin Fischer
